Ruby Lake

A small, cold lake in the village of Durrow.

The lake is corralled by the sheer Weald Clay cliffs that mark Durrow's boundary. The waters remain chilly even through summer, as the high cliffs block much of the sunlight that would otherwise warm the lake. Most say it is named for the high iron content in the rocks in the lake bed, but others tell a more romantic tale. The legend holds that a prosperous ruby merchant known as Mad Marlow, while on his way to sell in Bree, was caught in a flash flood and his waggon was washed into the lake. Most village folk scoff at this tale, but once in a while an adventurous child turns up with a sparkling ruby they found during a dive, baffling even the most ardent of skeptics.
